Facilities

Deakin University has outstanding facilities for Creative Arts students . An 18.4 million dollar facility, located at the Melbourne Burwood Campus, provides students access to an array of industry standard production and performance studios.

This unique facility allows students to work in an environment that encourages collaboration between art forms, and fosters the development of multi-skilled graduates.

The complex spans four levels, with dedicated studios for dance, drama, visual arts, tv and sound. There are also screening rooms, mixing facilities, digital video editing and animation suites, computer labs, photographic darkrooms and digital imaging studios. Collaborative spaces for hybrid art forms are also housed here.

Sharyn is the founder and director of the successful Fresh Youth Theatre group based in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, she has initiated a ‘Wellbeing Day’ program for upper primary and secondary students throughout Victoria, and also teaches literacy to teenagers unable to attend mainstream schools.

According to Sharyn, her Deakin experience and network have been invaluable in establishing Fresh Youth Theatre, which is part of the Blackburn Community Care Network.

"I wouldn’t have been able to set up Fresh without the skills and experiences gained at Deakin, ranging from performance and technical skills through to management and coordination and team building."

Putting in the hard yards in Deakin’s Bachelor of Arts course, majoring in Dance and Drama, is paying off for Tim Harvey as he spreads his wings on the international stage. Tim chose the Deakin course because it offered a ‘broad-based starting point’ from which he could explore and refine his interests in dance and text-based theatre. As well as his studies, Tim was involved in many additional projects to further expand his skills and knowledge. Tim said the Deakin course enabled students to develop their creative brains and techniques as well as gain practical skills such as sourcing and applying for funding and accessing performers.
The Deakin connection helped open doors of opportunity such as a two-week secondment with Melbourne-based choreographer Luke Hockey who was staging a production at the Australia Choreographer Centre in Canberra.
